What is a domain name?

A domain name is like a postal address for the Internet. It is the “address” that people use to go direct to your website on the Internet. Domain names are also referred to as a URL or web addresses.

Australian domain names

Any website address ending in .au is an Australian business. An ABN (Australian Business Number) is required before any business can register a .au website address. To get an ABN, you need to have a business registered in Australia.

When choosing a domain name…

…there are a few things to consider.

  • Is it easy to remember? The shorter the better
  • Does is include your business name or industry?
  • Do the .com.au, .com and .net versions of your desired domain point to your competitors?
  • Is it easily distinguishable from your competitors’ website address and business names?
  • Is it short and sweet? / Easy to remember?
  • Is it easy to spell?
  • Is is easy to say over the phone?
  • Is is available?
